Community Gives Mandate for Kahnawą:ke Residency Law

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Commission wishes to announce that the community has given the Mandate to proceed with proposed revisions to the Kahnawą:ke Residency Law. The decision was reached at the conclusion of the Community Consultation (Mandate) meeting held at the Golden Age Club, on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The community provided the following:

  • The Mandate to revise the Kahnawą:ke Residency Law, with focus on the items flagged for revision
  • Approval of the Scope of the revisions as presented on:
    • Complainant confidentiality
    • Clarifying references, including those related to fines
    • Adjusting references that are outdated, such as reference to the Community Review Board
    • Adjusting references to the Administrative Tribunal, and the Court of Kahnawą:ke, as appropriate
    • Clarifying definitions
    • Clerical changes
  • Selection of two (2) Community Representative to sit on the Technical Drafting Committee
Shatekaronhiase Cross and Carrie-Layne Diabo were appointed as the two (2) Community Representatives to sit on the Technical Drafting Committee (TDC). The next step will involve drafting the proposed revisions and inserting them into the current version of the law using track changes. The draft will then be posted on www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com for a 30-day feedback period. A press release will be issued once the document is available for community review. Following the feedback period, the TDC Technician will compile a report summarizing the feedback received. The report will be posted on www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com and addressed during the Hearings in Phase II. The community will be informed once the first CDMRP Hearing date has been scheduled.
