Upcoming Community Consultation meeting for the Kahnawą:ke Residency Law

02/10/2026

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Commission (KLC) wishes to advise the community that a Community Consultation (Mandate) Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Golden Age Club from 6pm to 8:30pm.

The Kahnawą:ke Residency Law was originally enacted in 2019 under the Urgent Process. The mandate, purpose, and scope were approved by the community, and the Law obtained community consensus. The Law was required to enter the Regular Process after one year of enactment. The reason for this is to ensure steps not taken while in the Urgent Process would now be taken.

The purpose of this Community Consultation (Mandate) meeting is to seek community consensus on the Mandate and Scope of the Law in the Regular Process. The Technical Drafting Committee (TDC) held consultations to re-acquaint the community with the Law and asked for feedback. During those consultations, the community, and the Office of the Kanien’kehį:ka of Kahnawą:ke Registry (OKKR), in working with the Law, flagged suggested revisions.

Therefore, the community will be asked to:

  1. confirm the Mandate to revise the Law;
  2. approve the suggested flagged sections as the Scope, including but not limited to:
    • Complainant confidentiality
    • Clarifying references, including those to fines
    • Adjusting references that are outdated such as reference to the now-defunct Community Review Board
    • Adjusting references to the Administrative Tribunal, and the Court of Kahnawake, as appropriate
    • Clarifying definitions
    • Clerical corrections; and
  3. Selection of 3 Community Representatives to sit on the TDC

Interested persons must be recognized on the Kanien’kehį:ka of Kahnawą:ke Registry and should confirm their attendance by contacting Samantha Montour at 450-632-7500 ext. 59334 or by email at samantha.montour@mck.ca. If there are not at least 10 registrants, the Mandate Meeting will be rescheduled. Walk-ins are welcome.
