10/18/2011

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the Mohawk Council of Kahnawį:ke Election Law will be brought forth for possible amendment using the Community Decision Making Process.

Proposed amendments were initially requested by community member Lori Jacobs to the Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission. Following due process, a working group was created utilizing Ms. Jacobs, technicians from the MCK’s Office of the Council of Chiefs as well as Darlene Alfred and Angus L. Montour. Jacobs, Alfred and Montour have all served as Electoral Officers in past MCK elections.

The first step (Phase 1) will be to inform the community about the current law and the proposed amendments. Information will be distributed through the various local media, a series of Kiosks at the Services Complex and community information sessions.

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawį:ke Election Law was passed on 21 Onerahtohkó:wa/May in 1990 and last amended in 2009.
