Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law Second Hearing Concluded – Closer to Enactment

03/21/2024

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Commission wishes to inform the community that the Second Hearing for amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke Election Law (the Law) was concluded last evening. Consensus was reached that the Law reflected all revisions from the First Hearing.

The next step will be for the Technical Drafting Committee (TDC) to present the Implementation/Operational/Financial Plan and Legal Review to the Council at a Legislative Session (duly convened Council meeting) on Monday, March 25, 2024. Following that, the TDC will Read the Law into the Record, and the Certification of the Process will be signed. The Reading of the Law into the Record will be filmed and publicized.

Lastly, the Law will move into Phase III, where it will be brought to the Council at another Legislative Session on April 2, 2024, for enactment via a Mohawk Council Resolution, and the Confirmation of the Will of the People will be signed. The Law will come into force once published, and the amended Law will be in effect for the upcoming election. Several items placed in the Parking Lot during the First and Second Hearings will be addressed in the future once the Law comes up again for amendment.
