Recap of Kahnawake Cannabis Control Law First Hearing

09/27/2018

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to inform the community on the outcome of Tuesday evening’s First Hearing for the Draft Kahnawą:ke Cannabis Control Law

The agenda included:

• Overview/review of the draft Kahnawą:ke Cannabis Control Law
• Opportunity for Questions/comments
• Declaration of Conclusion

Once the overview/review was completed, it became apparent that many of those present expressed concern regarding the amount of consultation that took place on the draft Law. Additionally, several spoke on the issue of the Law being categorized as a Type 2 (regulatory in nature). At the end of the meeting it was suggested that a referendum be held to answer the question on of whether the sale of cannabis should be allowed on the Territory. The suggestion was supported by many of those present and will be brought back to Chief & Council for further discussion/deliberation.

The meeting took place at Karonhianóhnha School.

The draft Law is available for viewing at (www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com).
