Kanien’keháka of Kahnawàke Law one step away from enactment

6/27/2018

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to advise the community that consensus was reached on all of the incidental changes to the Law pertaining to “Suspension of Entitlements” at last evening’s final meeting of the Second Hearing on proposed amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (formerly the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law).

This portion of the meeting was completed in less than ten minutes, at which time the Second Hearing was declared closed.

This was followed immediately by the Formal Reading of the Law. Upon completion, community members asked that the word ‘Pledge’ be changed to ‘Commitment’ in Section 14 (titled “Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Pledge”). This was agreed to by full consensus and the amendments were deemed as final.

This was followed by the Certification of Process, signed by the Technical Drafting Committee’s Community Representatives, and Alexis Shackleton (on behalf of the Membership Department, the proponents of the amendments).

Enactment of the law (by Mohawk Council Resolution) is tentatively scheduled to take place at a Duly Convened Council Meeting next week, at which time the Confirmation of the Will of the People is expected to be signed by Chief & Council.
