KLCC approves Urgent Process for proposed Residency Law

01/17/2017

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that a proposed Kahnawą:ke Residency Law will proceed onto the Legislative Calendar and has been categorized as Type I – Urgent.

While there have been three requests for the creation of a Residency Law, the most recent request was based on the implications of the Quebec Superior Court’s Descheneaux Decision and the time constraints caused by impending changes to Canada’s Indian Act. This made the need for Kahnawą:ke legislation both urgent and a priority.

The Proponent of the proposed law, Ietsénhaienhs Rhonda Kirby, has already begun front-end work on the Information Dissemination process. Once this is completed, the Community will be asked to decide whether to give a mandate to proceed with the proposed legislation. Dates should be announced in the near future.
