Next Membership Law Hearing tomorrow

6/13/2016

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to advise the community that the next meeting on proposed amendments to the Kahnawą:ke Membership Law will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, 14 Ohiarķ:ha/June 2016).

The first item on the agenda will be the continuation of the Definition of ‘Kanien’kehį:ka Great Grand Parent’ – specifically the definition of the word Sha’teienekwenhsi:hen, a term which roughly translated means ‘a person who comes from two cultures in approximately equal measures.’ While preliminary consensus was reached to use the term, certain details (such as the use of ‘47% blood quantum’ in the definition) will need to be discussed before the issue can be declared concluded.

Other agenda items include Section 15 (Application Process/Approved Kahnawą:ke Residents); Section 16 (Entitlements of the Kanien’kehį:ka of Kahnawą:ke); Section 17 (Privileges of Approved Kahnawą:ke Residents); Section 18 (Responsibilities of the Kanien’kehį:ka of Kahnawą:ke) and any relevant or affected Definitions.

The meeting will be held from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club and will be the 14th in this First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. The law is available for viewing at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com . Please note that this will be the final Kahnawą:ke Membership Law,/i> Hearing before the summer break.
