Consensus reached on two entire sections of proposed Kahnawake Tobacco Law

06/01/2016

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that full consensus was reached on two entire Sections of the proposed Kahnawą:ke Tobacco Law at last evening’s Hearing using the Community Decision Making Process.

Section VI (Kahnawą:ke Tobacco Regulatory Commission) includes 17 sub-headings and 49 total clauses, while Section VII (Powers and Duties of the Commission) consists of only one clause, but it is spread over two pages.

Only two additions were made to the draft. In the matter of 6.23 (Election of General Commission Members) and 6.27 (Election of Industry Commission Members), consensus was reached on the addition of the following to both: “In the event of a tie the Electoral Officer will either cast the deciding vote or determine the process to break the tie.”

In 6.48 (Conflict of Interest) consensus was reached on the proposed addition of “or significant other” to the description “…decision that affects an immediate family member.” The change was proposed because the definition of Immediate Family Member did not include girlfriend, boyfriend or significant other. It was determined that Significant Other was sufficient. The change was also reflected in Section 5.1 (Definitions) for consistency.

The meeting began at 6:13pm and closed at 8:25pm. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 28 Ohiarķ:ha/June 2016, but there is the possibility that another meeting may be added before the summer break.

The entire proposed Kahnawą:ke Tobacco Law can be viewed on the KLCC website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com .
