Recap of last evening’s Membership Law meeting11/25/2015The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to provide the community with a recap of last evening’s fifth meeting to discuss proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law. Fifteen community members attended the meeting, with all four agenda items addressed within the two-and-a-half hours allotted. The following is a brief synopsis of the outcomes: 1. Section 8, Kanien’keháka Registry Advisory Board: After much discussion, consensus was reached to remove this section completely due to its ‘redundant nature.’ 2. Section 9, Review of Registrar’s Decision: Consensus reached to redraft the section to reflect the sentiments expressed by the community on the role and powers of Administrative Tribunals 3. Section 10, Membership Review Council: Consensus reached on this section, with one major change. It was agreed to increase members of the Review Council to five (5) from the current three (3). There was also discussion on criteria for selection to the Review Council; it was clarified that the criteria would be included in the to-be-developed regulations on this matter. 4. Section 11, Verification of Recognition: This is the section that refers to people who should be ‘automatically’ enrolled as a member on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’keháka Registry should they clearly meet all of the criteria. Consensus reached to accept this Section as presented. The meeting concluded at 8:20pm. Upon completion, the Record of Discussion will be posted at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com. No date has been announced for the next meeting. View PDF |
