Consensus reached at Membership Law Hearing, date set for next meeting

11/13/2015

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to inform the community that consensus was reached on all three agenda items at last evening’s meeting on proposed amendments to the Kahnawą:ke Membership Law.

Discussion and debate on Section 7 (“Approved Kahnawą:ke Resident List”) and the formal removal of Section 8 (“Council of Elders”) were completed within 90 minutes. Approximately fifteen community members participated in the meeting, which was the fourth since the process to proceed with amendments took place earlier this year.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, 24 Kentenhkó:wa/November 2015 from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The agenda will include the next five sections, including Kanien’kehįka Registry Advisory Board; Review of Registrar’s Decision; Membership Review Council; Verification of Recognition; and Application Process/Recognition.

Note: For clarity, The Kahnawą:ke Membership Law is currently in the First Hearing portion of the Community Decision Making Process. Last evening’s meeting is technically referred to as the “fourth meeting of the First Hearing.” The KLCC usually refers only the meeting number to avoid confusion.
