Info session for proposed Kahnawake Tobacco Law scheduled for Tuesday, September 29

9/22/2015

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) wishes to inform the community that a formal information session has been scheduled for Tuesday, 29 Seskehkó:wa/September, at which time the proposed Kahnawą:ke Tobacco Law will be read in its entirety. The community feedback for the draft will also be presented at this time. A question and answer period will follow.

The event is scheduled for 6pm to 8:30pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The event has been sanctioned by the KLCC, who wish to make it clear that no decisions will be made at this meeting. A working group consisting of the Kahnawake Tobacco Association and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) have agreed to proceed in this manner in an effort to have community members gain a clear understanding of the proposed law.

Once this is completed, the KLCC will announce the next steps in the process.

The standard Community Decision Making Process is not being used for this specific law. Instead, a special arrangement was agreed to by the tobacco industry representatives and the MCK in order to facilitate a working relationship. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two in July 2014 to formalize the arrangement.
