Community Decision Making Process revisions in the works, feedback and suggestions needed

02/24/2015

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to invite Kahnawa’kehró:non to offer feedback or suggestions on proposed revisions to the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP).

A substantial majority of participants have indicated they feel the CDMP is too lengthy. In response to this, the KLCC is proposing several changes to improve efficiency. They include:

1. Instituting a limit of six months for the creation of new laws or amendments to existing laws
2. Mandating that more preliminary work take place before the laws or amendments are brought to the community
3. Eliminating the Third Hearing and replacing it with a Formal Reading where the law is read into the public record

Other changes are being proposed to both the Type I process (fundamental laws that affect the entire community), the Type II process (laws that are regulatory in nature that affect specific segments of the community or special interest groups), as well as other related processes. The complete list of proposed revisions is available at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com, the KLCC website.

Feedback or suggestions should be provided in person by visiting the KLCC offices located on the third floor of the Court of Kahnawą:ke Building; by email (leslie.skye@mck.ca), by telephone (450-632-7500, extension 2321) or by visiting the KLCC website and accessing the Feedback section.

Kiosks at the Services Complex will be scheduled to help gauge public opinion. This will be followed by an official Community Decision Making Process Hearing to confirm the feedback received on the proposed revisions. The dates for these events will be announced shortly.
