Kahnawake Justice System Law nearing conclusion - meeting tomorrow (Tuesday)

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind the community that the third Community hearing on the Second Draft of the proposed Kahnawà:ke Justice System Law will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Golden Age Club, from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Consensus has now been reached on most of the draft law. Clause 28, which contains definitions of terms used within the law, and a question on whether prospective judges should be required to be of Native descent are the only two remaining issues that need to be finalized.

“We are just a few short steps away from reaching the end of this phase of the process,” said Justice Portfolio Chief Christine Zachary-Deom. “Once this is completed we’ll be looking toward the finish line in terms of final passage.”

“Of course, there will still be much work to be done afterward, but we’ve nearly climbed that first mountain,” she concluded.

The proposed law is now in its Second Reading which, in the Community Decision Making Process, takes place once a second draft of a proposed law or amendment to a law reaches consensus. Once that is achieved, a final draft will be presented for a formal Third Reading and signed into law.
