Next Kahnawake Justice System Law Community Consultation next Tuesday at Golden Age Club

01/29/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to remind the community that the next Community Consultation on the second draft of the proposed Kahnawą:ke Justice System Law will take place next Tuesday 4, Ennķska/February 2014, from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club.

The meeting will begin at Section 5 (‘Court of Kahnawą:ke Judgments’) and Section 6 (‘Appeals from the Court of Kahnawą:ke in Criminal Matters’). Those planning to participate are asked to review the current draft, copies of which are available at the Court of Kahnawą:ke in the village area, the MCK main office, or online at the Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.

“The first hearing went well,” said Justice Portfolio Chief Christine Zachary-Deom. “There were good questions and comments but, at the end of the day, there were no changes required. I take that as a sign that we’ve been able to create a document that respects the community’s original mandate, which was given almost exactly four years ago.”

The proposed law is now in its Second Reading which, in the Community Decision Making Process, takes place once a second draft of a proposed law or amendment to a law is completed.
