Hearings for second draft of Justice System begin next Tuesday

01/15/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke would like to inform the community that the Second Hearing on the proposed Kahnawą:ke Justice System will take place next Tuesday, 21 Tsothohrkó:wa/January, from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Karonhianónhnha School gymnasium.

“Months of work went into creating a second draft that reflects the community’s ideas, needs and concerns,” said Director of Justice Services Ron Skye. “We hope that the team was successful in this regard. If so, we will look at this second draft in its entirety over the next few Community Consultations and build toward final community approval.

“We are on the cusp of something huge for Kahnawą:ke,” said Justice Portfolio Chief Christine Zachary-Deom. “This will be a great step in asserting and defending our jurisdiction. All of our laws will be able to be heard and appealed at our own court. We just need the confidence to take things to that level – and I think we are.”

The draft is available for viewing at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com, with hard copies available at the Court of Kahnawą:ke offices (located in the village) or the MCK main offices. Participants are being urged to arrive a few minutes early in order for the meeting to begin and end on schedule.
