No consensus reached at Membership Law consultation, more meetings to come

10/23/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to inform the community that last evening’s Community Consultation to amend the Kahnawą:ke Membership Law (“the Law” or “Membership Law”) ended before consensus could be reached on the proposals brought before the participants.

The meeting included a presentation of the statistics on the difference between Canada’s federal list and the Membership Law criteria for the Kahnawą:ke Kanien’kehį:ka Registry, a summary of the consensus reached by the groups from the thirteen previous sessions held from January to July 2013 and, finally, the first proposal on the Role of the Registrar for the groups’ discussion and consideration.

Approximately fifteen community members participated.

“I would have to say that there was general agreement on much of what was discussed, but time ran out before consensus could be reached,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “There’s still work that needs to be done.”

The Community Consultations will continue from the point where the meeting concluded. A date for the 15th Consultation will be announced shortly.
