Confirmation reached: Kahnawą:ke Membership Law to be amended

01/30/2013

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that consensus was reached last evening on two questions brought to the community in regard to proposed amendments to the Kahnawą:ke Membership Law.

After much discussion, there was consensus that the Kahnawą:ke Membership Law should use the Community Decision Making Process for any amendments; previously, it was the only Kahnawą:ke law that used a different amending formula.

There was also consensus reached that the law needs to be amended, though two participants held firm in their position that the law should be left ‘as is.’

The next steps will be to determine the scope, purpose and intent of the amendments, with dates for the next Consultations to be announced shortly. It was suggested by last evening’s participants that strong efforts be made to encourage the community to read the related documents ahead of time in order for the Consultations to proceed as efficiently as possible. Information is available online at kahnawakemakingdecisions.com, at the Membership office at the MCK’s Social Development Unit located at the Services Complex, or by contacting the Membership Registrar.

“Basically, the preliminary questions were answered last evening,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby. “The real work now begins and community members will now have the opportunity to determine exactly what changes to the law are needed.”

Approximately twenty community members participated in last evening’s Consultation.
