Request for Legislation to prohibit sale, manufacture and distribution of tobacco in Kahnawą:ke Phase 1 report posted online

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to inform the community that the Phase One Summary Report on the ‘Request for Legislation to prohibit sale, manufacture and distribution of tobacco in Kahnawą:ke’ is now available for viewing online at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com and at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke main reception.

More importantly, a meeting for Community Consultation on this legislation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22nd at the Knights of Columbus from 6pm to 8pm.

The proponent of the Request for Legislation and a Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) technician conducted various consultation activities with the community, including Information Kiosks, K103 Partyline Talkshow appearances and articles in the Eastern Door Newspaper. The report also contains feedback comments from Questionnaires conducted at the Kahnawą:ke Services Complex, the Golden Age Club and online.

The proposal was submitted to the Commission on 29, Ohiari’kó:wa/July 2010 and includes the following specific requests:

1. The distribution and sale of any and all cigarettes within the Kahnawake territory is hereby deemed illegal.

2. The mass production of any tobacco that is not strictly intended for personal use, such as medicinal, be deemed illegal.

The MCK would like to be clear that the submission of this Request for Legislation follows the Community Decision Making Process guidelines and, as such, does not necessarily reflect the position of the MCK regarding the manufacture, sale or distribution of tobacco products within the Territory.
